DHRUVA (Digital Hub for Reference and Unique Virtual Address) is a transformative Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) initiative by the Department of Posts designed to revolutionize Indian addressing similarly to how UPI transformed payments. By assigning a permanent, 10-character alphanumeric DIGIPIN to every 4m x 4m geospatial grid in the country, the system converts unstructured physical locations into precise, machine-readable coordinates. This “Address-as-a-Service” model enables users to link these complex codes to easy-to-remember Virtual Addresses (e.g., user@home) for interoperable use across logistics, e-commerce, and governance platforms. Built on an open-source, consent-based framework, DHRUVA aims to drastically reduce last-mile delivery failures, enhance emergency response accuracy, and streamline KYC processes while ensuring users retain ownership and control over their location data.
