China-France Satellite – Study Universe’s Explosive Events
The China-France Space Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) satellite, launched on June 22 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, aims to study gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). GRBs are powerful cosmic events that occur in distant galaxies, classified into short (neutron star collisions) and long (massive star deaths) bursts. SVOM's mission is to detect and analyze these bursts to understand the universe's evolution. The satellite, weighing 930 kg, features instruments like the ECLAIRs and MXT telescopes from France and the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor and Visible Telescope from China. It orbits at 625 km with a 96-minute period.
