World Drought Atlas 2024
The UNCCD’s World Drought Atlas 2024 warns that 75% of the global population may face drought-related challenges by 2050, emphasizing the need for better resilience strategies. Droughts severely impact agriculture, trade, and energy, exacerbated by human mismanagement of land and water. India is particularly vulnerable, with millions dependent on agriculture and recent cases like the 2019 Chennai water crisis underscoring poor resource management. The report highlights the importance of early warning systems and initiatives like the International Drought Resilience Alliance (IDRA) for improving drought resilience through better policies, technology, and sustainable practices.
