Startups Return to India Post Angel Tax Abolition

The abolition of the angel tax, introduced in 2012 under Section 56(2)(viib) of the Income Tax Act, has encouraged startups to relocate back to India, reversing a trend of registering abroad for tax advantages. This policy change, part of the FY25 Budget, is promoting “reverse flipping” and fostering an improved ease of doing business. Since the launch of Startup India in 2016, over 157,000 startups have registered, creating 1.7 million jobs. Funding surged to 5 billion in 2024. DPIIT-led initiatives like collaborations with foreign investors and promoting manufacturing startups underline India's commitment to strengthening its entrepreneurial ecosystem.
