Oropouche Virus Overview
The Oropouche virus, spread by biting midges and mosquitoes, is causing a surge in cases across South America, with over 8,000 reported since August 1, and has now spread to the US and Europe. The virus causes symptoms similar to dengue, including fever, headache, and muscle pain, and may lead to serious complications like meningitis. There is no vaccine, and treatment focuses on symptom relief. Climate change, human movement, and deforestation are contributing to its spread, making prevention measures, such as using insect repellent and protective clothing, essential.
