Mithun Bovine Sightings in Assam
The recent discovery of mithun (Bos frontalis), a semi-wild type of cattle, in Assam marks the first recorded sighting of this species in the region. Previously thought to inhabit only the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, this new finding in Assam's Dima Hasao district expands the known range of mithuns. Over 200 mithuns have been identified in remote areas, highlighting challenges in past livestock surveys that often mislabeled the species. Mithuns are vital to the livelihoods of tribal communities in northeastern India, providing meat, milk, and agricultural benefits. The discovery encourages new research, initiatives to support mithun farming, and a more accurate count in the upcoming livestock census.
