Manipur Takes Steps To Save Endangered Meitei Ponies
The Government of Manipur, alongside equestrian groups and state offices, has initiated a comprehensive plan to save the endangered Manipuri Pony, also known as Meitei Sagol. This initiative, formalized on May 16, 2024, includes gathering the ponies, creating temporary housing, forming a task force, and studying grazing grounds. The Manipuri Pony, historically significant for its role in the traditional game Sagol Kangjei (polo), faces a dramatic population decline due to urbanization, disease, and other factors. The government’s efforts also involve implementing the Manipuri Pony Conservation and Development Policy, designating permanent habitats, and encouraging research and tourism to ensure the breed's survival and cultural preservation.
