Green Steel Standards in India

India has become the first country to define “green steel” standards, classifying steel with carbon emissions below 2.2 tonnes per tonne of finished steel. A star-rating system evaluates green steel, with five stars for emissions below 1.6 tonnes. The government’s ₹15,000 crore Green Steel Mission aims to promote sustainable steel production through public procurement policies and financial support. Transitioning to green steel requires an estimated ₹260,000 crore in investments for cleaner technologies, like hydrogen and biochar. India also plans safeguard duties on steel imports to protect domestic production and encourage environmentally friendly practices.
