Executions in India- Can Lethal Injection be the Better Option?

Recently, the Supreme Court asked the Centre to defend that law allows hanging as a mode of execution. This has reopened the debate on whether India can adopt a more humane method of execution.
Background:
- 55 countries’ statute books still have provisions for death sentence, according to Amnesty International.
- There are different modes of executions- such as death by hanging, lethal injections, etc. Recently, yet another state (5th state so far) in the USA moved to reintroduce firing squads as lethal injections are in short supply.
- In India, death row prisoners are executed by hanging. Among the different modes of execution, death by hanging is the most prevalent
