Infant Abandonment Issue: Why Surrendering is a Better Option

Recently, there have been several cases of infants being abandoned in public spaces. While this has been an issue even in the past, there has been an increasing trend since the pandemic.
How significant is the issue in India?
- It isn’t uncommon to see reports of new-born children being found abandoned in dustbins, garbage piles, by the roadsides or in places of worship.
- According to NCRB report, among the states, the highest number of abandoned infants was recorded in Maharashtra (1,184 cases), followed by Madhya Pradesh (1,168 cases), Rajasthan (814 cases), Karnataka (771 cases) and Gujarat (650 cases).
- Among the cities, Delhi topped the list with 221 cases, followed by Bengaluru, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Indore.
