What is witch hunting?
- Witch hunting is the targeting and torture of people, especially women, accused of being witches or practicing witchcraft.
- This superstition–driven practice is said to have originated in Morigaon region of Assam, some hundreds of years ago.
- It is especially prevalent in isolated rural areas and among tribal settlements.
How prevalent is witch hunting in India?
- Between 1999 and 2013, some 2,300 cases of ‘witch killing’ have been reported from across India.
