Dunlin Spotted in Kerala Bird Race

The Kerala Bird Race in Kochi highlighted 192 bird species, including the Dunlin, a small shorebird recently classified as "Near Threatened." Birdwatchers observed a significant count reduction, with 4,885 birds recorded compared to 8,639 last year. The event spanned 100 locations with about 100 participants. Rare sightings included the Red Avadavat, Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl, and Mongolian Short-toed Lark. Organized by the Cochin Natural History Society and others, it emphasized youth involvement in conservation efforts. Puthuvype Beach emerged as a key birdwatching site.
