Uttarakhand’s Soapstone Mining Crisis
Unregulated soapstone mining in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district has caused severe environmental and cultural damage. Land subsidence and erosion have destabilized areas like Kanda, displacing traditional Kumaoni Bakhli homes and threatening the historic Kalika Temple. Reports highlight administrative failures in regulating mining practices and suppressing local dissent. With over 160 soapstone mines in the region, unchecked activities exacerbate risks of landslides and loss of heritage. The Uttarakhand High Court has ordered investigations to address these issues. Sustainable mining practices and effective regulations are urgently needed to protect the region’s environment and cultural identity.
