Why Has Earth’s Inner Core Slowed Down?
Recent studies from the University of Southern California reveal that Earth's inner core, a solid iron sphere about 3,000 miles below the surface, has slowed down. Historically, it spun faster than the planet's outer layers, a phase known as "super-rotation." Seismograph data from 2008 to 2023 indicate a shift to a sub-rotational phase. This slowdown could affect Earth's magnetic field and geological events, though the exact reasons and implications are still under investigation.
