WHO Launches Project to Develop H5N1 Vaccines Using mRNA

On July 29, 2024, the WHO launched a project to develop H5N1 bird flu vaccines using mRNA technology, led by Argentinian company Sinergium Biotech. This initiative aims to address recent outbreaks and potential human pandemics by ensuring vaccine equity in poorer countries. The project builds on the WHO's mRNA Technology Transfer Programme, initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic, to enhance global vaccine production capabilities. By leveraging mRNA technology, the project aims to improve preparedness for future pandemics and support sustainable vaccine production. The WHO, founded in 1948 and based in Geneva, Switzerland, plays a crucial role in global health standards and pandemic responses.
