The Jal Shakti Ministry released India’s 1st water body census, covering reservoirs of the precious resource in both- urban and rural areas. This reports holds significance for India’s water crisis and its numerous efforts to tackle it.
What is the Water Body Census?
- Since 1986, the Central Government has conducted a census of minor irrigation structures, once every five years. Till now, government agencies have indirectly compiled data on minor irrigation works from the population Census.
- Now, the Jal Shakti Ministry released the first-ever Water Body Census in India.
- It is a database containing detailed information about water bodies such as ponds, tanks, lakes
