USA saw a string of mass shooting events in January 2023, the most recent ones being the Monterey Park incident and the Half Moon Bay incident in California. The local leadership are lamenting these as ‘tragedy upon tragedy’ and are again calling for stricter gun control.
Background:
- A mass shooting is a shooting incident that kills at least 4 people, according to the US Department of Justice.
- In January 2023, USA saw the death of 73 people in shooting incidents, according to GVA (Gun Violence Archive). 42 of these deaths were in mass shootings. Notably, the number of shooting deaths this January is thrice what it was in January 2022 (with 24 deaths).
