Urgent Action Needed for Assam’s Feral Horses
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has highlighted the urgent need to protect the critically endangered feral horses in Assam’s Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. These horses, thought to be war horse descendants or related to Przewalski’s horse, face threats like habitat loss, smuggling, and flooding. Their lack of protection under the Wildlife Protection Act and the absence of a census complicate conservation. The NGT has summoned the Ministry of Environment and other authorities to address violations of the Biodiversity and Environment Protection Acts. The case aims to ensure immediate actions for preserving these unique equines, pivotal to Assam's biodiversity.
