UN Body Withholds Accreditation To India’s Human Rights Commission

The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) has delayed India's National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) accreditation due to concerns about its adherence to the Paris Principles, which ensure independence, fairness, and competence. Established in 1993, NHRC's last "A" rating was in 2017. If NHRC loses this status, it cannot vote or represent India at the UN Human Rights Council, impacting India's global human rights influence. GANHRI's review highlights issues in NHRC's appointment process, minority representation, and government interference. Addressing these issues is crucial for NHRC's future accreditation and global role.
