Tamil Nadu Declares Heatwave a State Disaster
Tamil Nadu has declared heatwaves a state disaster, enabling financial relief for affected families and using the State Disaster Response Fund to support heatwave management. This decision follows record-breaking global and local temperatures, with 2023 identified as the hottest year. Past heatwaves in India have resulted in thousands of fatalities, and in 2024, Rajasthan experienced temperatures as high as 50.5°C, causing numerous heat-related illnesses and fatalities. Declaring heatwaves a state disaster underscores the need for systematic health measures to address the direct and indirect effects of extreme heat, ensuring better public safety and preparedness.
