Supreme Court Orders National Policy on GM Crops
The Supreme Court of India directed the Union government to establish a national policy for genetically modified (GM) crops, following a divided decision on GM mustard. Emphasizing a democratic, consultative approach, the court highlighted the need for a biosafety policy prioritizing health and environmental impacts. With diverse state responses to GM crops, the policy must balance technological innovation with farmers' welfare, avoiding past pitfalls seen with BT cotton. Alternative methods like marker-assisted breeding and public-sector contributions are emphasized for food security. The policy aims for a science-based framework that addresses India’s unique agricultural needs while protecting biodiversity and public welfare.
