Stellaria bengalensis: New Plant Discovery

A new plant species, Stellaria bengalensis, has been discovered in Kalimpong, West Bengal, adding to India’s biodiversity. Found at altitudes of 2,245–2,450 meters, this small annual herb grows on muddy slopes. Researchers Arya S. and Harsh Singh published the findings in Phytotaxa. The plant features white flowers, lacks bracts, and produces pointed seeds, flowering between May and September. India now has approximately 22 Stellaria species, predominantly in the Himalayas. While currently listed as “data deficient” by the IUCN, further research is required to assess its conservation needs. This discovery underscores ongoing efforts to document India’s flora.
