Protected Planet Report 2024
The Protected Planet Report 2024, released at COP16, evaluates global progress toward the 30×30 biodiversity goal, aiming for 30% protection of land and marine areas by 2030. Currently, 17.6% of land and 8.4% of marine regions are protected, necessitating significant increases. Challenges include connectivity and effective management, particularly on Indigenous lands, which cover 13.6% of global territory but face limited governance support. The report also highlights livestock's role in carbon storage, with mixed farms demonstrating 33% higher soil organic carbon than crop-only farms. Sustainable practices are essential for biodiversity, soil health, and community stability.
