Last year, the government opened up opium production and processing to the private sector. Meanwhile, the legal cultivation of opium poppy is suffering several challenges.
About Opium Poppy:
- Opium Poppy is a medicinal herb of the family Papaveraceae.
- It is the source of opium gum, which has several medicinally important alkaloids, including morphine and codeine.
- Morphine is one of the most effective analgesic i.e. pain reliever. It is especially prescribed to terminally ill cancer patients.
