New X-Band Radar Approved for Wayanad Flood Monitoring

Following the devastating floods and landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, in July 2024, the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences approved the installation of an X-band radar to enhance weather tracking and provide early warnings for landslides. The radar will offer high-resolution, short-range images ideal for monitoring soil movement and localized weather patterns. This initiative is part of India's broader radar network expansion under Mission Mausam, with plans to install 60 weather radars by 2026. The radar installation aims to prevent future disasters and protect vulnerable communities in the region.
