New Rules for Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee

The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC), a regulatory body under India’s Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, has updated its rules to improve transparency and mitigate conflicts of interest among its members. The amendments require members to disclose affiliations and recuse themselves if conflicts arise. These changes align with a Supreme Court ruling from July 2023 emphasizing transparency in GM crop approvals. The GEAC evaluates proposals involving hazardous microorganisms and GM organisms, ensuring environmental safety. It consists of 24 members, including experts from diverse sectors, and holds the authority to review and restrict GM organism activities in India.
