Nafithromycin: India’s First Locally Developed Antibiotic

India’s Wockhardt Ltd has developed Nafithromycin, the first locally produced antibiotic in 30 years, to combat drug-resistant bacteria causing community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP). Launched on November 20, 2024, the drug, supported by Rs 8 crore from BIRAC and Rs 500 crore in trials, is 10 times more potent than azithromycin and demonstrates a 96.7% clinical cure rate. It highlights India's role in addressing global health threats like antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and sets a benchmark in indigenous antibiotic development.
