MASLD: Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease
Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) has replaced Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) to better reflect the disease's link to metabolic dysfunctions such as obesity and diabetes. MASLD affects 25% of the global population, with higher rates in obese or diabetic individuals. Advances in diagnostics, including FibroScan and new biomarkers like CK-18 fragments, support early detection. Preventative measures include dietary changes to manage blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of severe complications like heart disease. The new terminology aims to reduce stigma and improve patient care.
