Kerala’s Kozhikode – India’s first UNESCO ‘City of Literature’
Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, was honored as India’s first UNESCO ‘City of Literature’ on June 23. This recognition celebrates the city’s rich cultural history and aims to develop its literary abilities. The Mayor of Kozhikode and the Kerala Institute of Local Administration played pivotal roles in achieving this title, surpassing Kolkata. Kozhikode is home to cultural icons, including two Jnanpith laureates, and has a vibrant scene in cinema, music, and media. The city will celebrate "City of Literature Day" annually on June 23 and present six literary awards each year. Historically, Kozhikode is significant for Vasco da Gama's arrival in 1498 and was once a major spice trade hub.
