Japan US Hypersonic Missile Interceptors by 2030s
Japan and the United States have signed a cooperative agreement to develop hypersonic missile interceptors, aiming for deployment by the 2030s. This partnership, initiated at a Camp David meeting and reaffirmed in subsequent summits, addresses the increasing threat from hypersonic weapons possessed by China, Russia, and North Korea. The new Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) will integrate with the U.S. Navy’s Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system, leveraging advanced detection and propulsion technologies. This collaboration builds on the successful SM-3 Block IIA program and represents a significant enhancement of regional defense capabilities.
