India’s New Mars Craters

The Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad discovered three new craters on Mars, named Lal, Mursan, and Hilsa. Lal Crater, 65 km wide, is covered in lava and named after Prof. Devendra Lal. Mursan and Hilsa, each 10 km wide, are named after towns in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, respectively. SHARAD/MRO radar revealed a 45-meter-thick sedimentary layer in Lal Crater, indicating past water flow. Mursan and Hilsa craters provide insights into Mars's environmental changes and episodic infilling processes.
