Indian Navy Modernization Plan
The Indian Navy has embarked on a significant modernisation effort, converting the propulsion systems of its Brahmaputra-class frigates from steam to diesel, starting with INS Beas. This upgrade, facilitated by a contract with Cochin Shipyard Limited, aims to extend the ships' operational life, improve maintenance, and enhance combat capabilities. Diesel engines offer better conditions for the crew and are easier to maintain. This initiative not only upgrades the fleet but also supports indigenous engineering efforts, such as the development of marine diesel engines by Kirloskar and GRSE, promoting self-reliance in defence technology.
