India State of Forest Report 2023

The India State of Forest Report 2023, released by the Forest Survey of India, reveals that India’s forest and tree cover spans 8,27,357 sq. km, comprising 25.17% of the geographical area. Forest cover alone accounts for 7,15,343 sq. km (21.76%), and tree cover is 1,12,014 sq. km (3.41%). Since 2021, there has been a 1,445 sq. km increase in total cover. Madhya Pradesh leads in forest and tree cover, while Lakshadweep has the highest percentage. Mangrove cover is 4,992 sq. km, and bamboo-bearing areas have grown. India’s carbon stock is now 7,285.5 million tonnes, contributing to 2030 climate targets.
