Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus from the Pneumoviridae family, first identified in 2001. It causes cold-like symptoms, including cough, fever, and wheezing, and is more prevalent in winter and early spring. It primarily affects children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. HMPV spreads via direct contact with infected individuals or surfaces contaminated by respiratory secretions. Currently, there is no vaccine or antiviral treatment; prevention involves hygiene practices like handwashing and avoiding close contact with infected individuals. China's disease control authority has initiated monitoring systems to track infections like HMPV, highlighting global efforts to address respiratory illnesses.
