Human-Cape Buffalo Conflicts

In Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), conflicts between humans and Cape buffaloes are escalating due to increasing human populations, habitat loss, and crop invasions by buffaloes. Between 1999 and 2014, Cape buffalo numbers declined by 18%, with a current global population of around 570,000. Farmers use traditional methods like guarding and electric fences to deter buffaloes. Proposed solutions include innovative techniques such as chilli bombs, drones, and community-driven strategies. Wildlife authorities recommend crop planting restrictions near protected areas to balance conservation and community welfare.
