HPAI H5N1 Outbreak in Indian Wildlife

The outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in India caused the deaths of three tigers and a leopard at Nagpur's Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park, marking the first HPAI-induced wildlife fatalities in India. The virus, known for infecting over 500 species globally, poses a significant threat. Authorities issued a red alert for zoos, initiated biosecurity protocols, and called for a One Health approach. Measures include isolating symptomatic animals, banning unverified poultry feed, and enhancing hygiene. The outbreak underscores the need for integrated responses to zoonotic diseases, emphasizing the interconnectedness of wildlife and human health.
