Himachal Pradesh’s Claim on Shanan Hydropower Project

Himachal Pradesh has reaffirmed its claim over the Shanan Hydropower Project, a 110 MW facility on a 99-year lease to Punjab since 1932. With the lease nearing expiration, CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has sought the Centre's intervention, arguing that the project lies outside Punjab's jurisdiction. Punjab has dismissed these claims, asserting the dispute was previously resolved. Himachal has also raised the issue of outstanding power arrears worth 13,066 million units. This dispute underscores the need for careful resolution of inter-state energy resource issues, with the Centre likely playing a mediating role.
