Haryana’s Declining Sex Ratio at Birth
In 2024, Haryana’s sex ratio at birth fell to an eight-year low of 910 girls per 1,000 boys, raising concerns among activists. This marks a significant decline from 916 in 2023 and a peak of 923 in 2019. Historical improvements attributed to the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign and strict enforcement of the PNDT Act have weakened, allowing sex-selective practices to resurface. Factors like societal gender bias, economic pressures, and preference for male children contribute to the decline. Government initiatives like financial incentives and awareness campaigns aim to address these challenges, but sustained enforcement and cultural shifts are essential for progress.
