Gaddi Dog Breed Officially Recognised
The Gaddi dog breed, indigenous to the Himalayan region, has been officially recognised by the ICAR-NBAGR, aiming to support its conservation amidst declining populations and a diminishing nomadic lifestyle. Known for guarding livestock against predators, Gaddi dogs are linked to Gaddi shepherds in Himachal Pradesh. With an estimated population under 1,000, the breed faces threats from gene pool dilution and lack of breeding programmes. Recognised as the Bhote Kukur, the muscular, medium-sized dogs feature a distinctive tufted mane. Official recognition seeks to raise awareness, initiate conservation efforts, and highlight the breed’s ecological importance in the Himalayan ecosystem.
