First Mako Shark Tagged
Virginia Tech researchers tagged a young shortfin mako shark in the Mediterranean Sea for the first time during a white shark study. Using a pop-off archival tag, the shark's movement was tracked for 54 days, revealing a 750-mile journey. The data provides insights into their migration patterns, essential for conservation efforts. Shortfin makos, an endangered species, play a critical role in marine ecosystems. Protecting nursery areas alone is insufficient, as their migrations span vast distances. This research underscores the importance of targeted conservation strategies to ensure marine health and biodiversity.
