Farmers’ Protests and Supreme Court Committee

The farmers’ protests at the Punjab-Haryana border continue as the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Political) and Bharti Kisan Union (Ugrahan) declined engagement with the Supreme Court’s high-powered committee. Established on September 2, 2024, the committee aims to address farmers’ demands, alleviate public distress from highway blockades, and examine agrarian challenges. Justice (Retd.) Nawab Singh chairs the committee, supported by experts in agriculture. The protests stem from resistance to agricultural laws perceived as detrimental to farmers’ livelihoods. The committee’s initial report identified issues like stagnant yields and recommended exploring legal protections for minimum support prices (MSP) and income support.
