At the recent National Law Day celebrations organized by the apex court, the President highlighted the issue of prison overcrowding and the need to address it. Notably, in her remark, President Murmu questioned building new jails as the solution, when India is aiming at societal progress. This comes in the backdrop of the exchange between the Chief Justice of India and the Union Law Minister on the issue.

What is the current situation?

According to the 2021 Prison Statistics India report from the Ministry of Home Affairs:
