National Suicide Prevention Strategy- Highlights and Significance

Recently, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare published the National Suicide Prevention Strategy- a document that has been a long time coming.
What are the highlights?
- The national strategy notes that majority of the suicides are preventable and seeks to achieve a 10% reduction in suicide mortality by 2030.
- Some of the trends noted by the document:
- India accounts for 37% of suicides among women and 24.3% of suicides among men globally.
- More than 50% of India’s suicide cases are those of daily wage earners, the self-employed and housewives.
- Some 63% of people who died from suicide in India, in 2020, earned less than 1 lakh INR/ year.
