COVID-19 Vaccine Linked to Rare Blood Disorder

A study published in Frontiers of Medicine associates the CoronaVac COVID-19 vaccine with immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a rare but serious blood disorder. Researchers documented two TTP cases following vaccination in Nanjing, China, where an increase in TTP cases coincided with the vaccine rollout. TTP, caused by ADAMTS13 deficiency, leads to clots, low platelets, and potential organ damage. Effective treatments included plasma exchange and immunosuppression. While the findings underline the importance of vaccine safety monitoring, they also emphasize the need for further research into the underlying mechanisms and improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
