China-U.S. Science Agreement Extended Until 2029
The China-U.S. Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement has been extended until 2029, continuing a collaboration that began in 1979. Initially focused on agricultural research, the Agreement now includes 40 sub-agreements across fields like agriculture and nuclear fusion. It has faced limitations due to concerns about intellectual property and unequal benefits. The renewal restricts collaboration to intergovernmental projects and basic research, excluding critical technologies. While China's R&D spending has grown significantly, the U.S. benefits from monitoring these advancements. The Agreement highlights the mutual interest in leveraging science for bilateral benefits and addressing shared challenges like clean energy and innovation.
