Butterfly Migration Thrives in Western Ghats

In 2023, Tamil Nadu witnessed a large-scale migration of butterflies from the Danainae sub-family, including species like Blue Tiger and Common Crow, moving from the Eastern Ghats to the Western Ghats. The migration, peaking on September 28, was significantly larger than the previous year due to favorable breeding conditions from better monsoon rainfall. The Nature and Butterfly Society (TNBS), tracking the migration since 2013, recorded hundreds of butterflies per minute across areas like Yercaud and Coimbatore. This migration highlights the importance of preserving habitats in the Western Ghats to sustain butterfly populations and biodiversity.
