BHEL Commissions Units in Bhutan

BHEL has successfully commissioned two units of the Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project (PHEP-II) in Bhutan, part of a 6×170 MW greenfield project in the Wangdue district. Designed to produce 4,357 GWh annually upon full commissioning, the project utilises Francis turbines with the highest-rated head in Bhutan (241 meters). The milestone was celebrated on Bhutan’s National Day, December 17, 2024. BHEL’s involvement spans design to commissioning, showcasing advanced hydroelectric technology. This project reinforces the India-Bhutan energy partnership, with BHEL contributing nearly 89% of Bhutan’s total installed capacity. Future endeavors include PHEP-I and hydropower projects in Nepal.
