Astronomers Discover New Method to Study Solar Magnetic Fields
Astronomers at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) have developed a new method to study the Sun's magnetic fields across different atmospheric layers, which could lead to better predictions of solar events that affect Earth. Using the Kodaikanal Tower Tunnel Telescope and specific spectral lines, scientists have focused on understanding the magnetic activity in the Sun's active regions, especially around sunspots. This research could solve key mysteries in solar physics, including the unusual heat of the Sun's outer layer (the corona), and improve our ability to predict solar storms that can disrupt communications and power on Earth.
