Assam Witness Protection Scheme, 2024

The Assam Witness Protection Scheme, 2024, initiated by the Assam Cabinet, aims to safeguard witnesses facing increasing threats in court cases. This scheme aligns with Section 398 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, to enhance the reliability of evidence in court. Witnesses can request protection from a district-level Competent Authority, which includes judicial and law enforcement officials. Witnesses are categorized into three threat levels. Protection measures include recorded trials, home security, and possible relocation, funded by a special state authority. Additionally, fines for two-wheeler documentation violations are removed, while helmet laws remain, and three-wheeler violations receive warnings before fines.
