Anti-Insecticide Fabric
Researchers at the Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (inStem) in Bengaluru have developed a novel anti-insecticide fabric that neutralizes organophosphate pesticides, making it safer for farmers. Initially, the team attempted to create a gel for skin application, but faced challenges with consistent use and regulatory compliance. They then shifted focus to developing a special cloth that effectively neutralizes pesticides. This fabric, designed by Dr. Praveen Kumar Vemula's team, uses small molecules covalently linked to cellulose in cotton to break down pesticides, maintaining its protective properties through 150 wash cycles. Lab tests confirmed its effectiveness, showing that rats protected by the fabric maintained normal enzyme levels and survived pesticide
